Abstract

Tip-buckets are fitted with latching-mechanism which is connected by a supplementary chain to the hoisting-chain and is operated automatically to dump the load when the hoisting-chain is slackened first and then raised again. The apparatus comprises a pair of parallel bent levers C pivoted to the 'bail at C<1> and engaging a fixed fork D on the bucket. The tail ends of the levers carry a shaft on which is fixed a ratchet-wheel 4 and a double link 3 attached by the chain 7 to the hoisting-chain. The apparatus is set by adjusting the length of the chain 7 until the pull on the hoisting-chain will not swing the levers bodily about the pivot C<1>. This end is attained when the link 3 is upwardly inclined as illustrated, and abutting against a stop 8. When the appliance is set, the pawl 5 is moved by hand into engagement with the ratchet-wheel. When the bucket rests on the ground, or elsewhere, and the hoisting- chain is slackened, the link 3 falls by gravity until it abuts against the lowest stop 9. During this operation, the ratchet-wheel overruns the pawl so that, on re-hoisting, the link 3 is fixed in alinement with the tail of the lever, which shortens the effective length of the chain 7 so that the lever C is swung about its pivot to release the fork D.
