Abstract
551,721. Mechanical shovels. HENDERSON, W. M. Sept. 6, 1941, No. 11418. [Class 68 (i)] A mechanical shovel comprises a carrier 1, such as a motor truck, carrying a jib 3, pivoted at 4, a scoop 5 being pivoted at 6 on the free end of the jib and having an arm 10 connected by a rope 8 to a winch 7 which may be driven by the engine of the truck and mounted as shown or above the engine. At the beginning of a cycle of operations, the jib is held in vertical position by a catch 11, and the scoop is held by a catch 12. On releasing the catch 11, the jib and scoop descend by gravity into digging position. The catch 12 is then released by lever 12a, and on operation of the winch, the scoop is first rocked about its pivot 6 to take up a load, and the jib is then lifted; during the lifting, the scoop begins to dump, through its open rear end, into a tipping &c. body 2 of the truck, or on to a conveyer &c. When the jib reaches the vertical postion against a stop 14, it is locked by the catch 11, and the scoop completes its pivotal, dumping movement, at the end of which the arm 10 engages a lever 15 to free the winch clutch and the scoop returns by gravity to a position in which it is locked by the catch 12. Braking means may be provided to check the swinging movement of the jib. Specifications 16049/13, [Class 68 (i)], 513,264 and 520,292 are referred to.
