A pivoted loading arm is operated by hydraulic means having a valve controlled by a hand lever and catch plate with a pawl and means on the arm disengaging the pawl when in the upper position and spring means returning the valve to its initial position on disengaging the pawl. The arm a of the loader is secured to a member d, pivoted at one end e to a pair of brackets f secured to a platform or to a vehicle g, and secured at the other end to the rod h of a hydraulic cylinder i. The cover plate j of the cylinder is pivoted by trunnions m to the brackets and contains a valve the fluid being supplied through a pipe k to one end of a trunnion. The outer end of the valve carries a spring loaded lever o connected by a chain or the like to a lever q pivoted to a bracket f. The lever is connected by a spring r to a catch plate s pivoted to the bracket. A pawl v pivoted to the bracket can engage a notch w in the catch plate to hold it in position. The catch plate is connected by a link x to a handle y on the arm a. By rotating the handle the valve is opened and retained open by the pawl v. The arm a is raised until a stop z on the arm strikes the pawl releasing the catch plate which rotates to close the valve the arm returning to its initial position by gravity. The loader arm may be adapted to carry sacks, bags open at one end, barrels or a bucket which may be tipped by a further lever on the arm connected with the bucket and which has a striker which contacts a stop on the vehicle to effect tipping.
