Abstract

Electro-magnetic switches.-An electro-magnetic switch which can be operated by a local circuit from any point and controls lamps or small motors comprises a solenoid 1 having a core furnished with pole-pieces 2, 3 and a tilting armature 4 in unstable equilibrium pivoted at its lowest point 5 so as to move between the polepieces when the solenoid is energized. The movement of the armature is limited by a pin 10 thereon engaging with a slot 9 in a non-magnetic plate 8 secured to the pole-piece 3. The plate is formed at its top edge with a recess 22 in which a loose pawl 20 on the armature may engage. On depression of one of the control push-buttons, the local circuit through the solenoid is completed, and the armature, together with the arm 12 carrying fork contacts, is drawn to the axis of the solenoid and by inertia passes beyond this position. It is prevented from returning to the axial line by the pawl 20. When, however, the solenoid circuit is broken by releasing the press-button, the armature falls so that the prongs bridge the mercury contacts 14. On again depressing and releasing a button, the armature is restored to its original position.
