Abstract
1536107 Cutting by heat J S BROWER 29 April 1977 18113/77 Heading E1F [Also in Divisions B3 and B5] An electrode for a portable electric arc cutting torch comprises a metallic, e.g. steel, tube 10, Fig. 4, within which are disposed rods 14 of which a number are of ferrous metal, e.g. steel, and at least one is selected from the group consisting of Al, Mg, Ti and alloys thereof, the exterior surface of the tube being covered by a layer of electrically insulating material, e.g. plastics. The torch, Fig. 1, comprises a holder 16 in which the tube 10 is held by a collet 26 and a washer 27, the holder being connected to a handle 18. Oxygen under pressure is supplied from a portable container (56), Fig. 6 (not shown), through an inlet tube 20 and through passages in the handle and holder and passes between the rods 14 in the tube 10, the flow of oxygen being controlled by a valve actuated by a handle 22. An electrical power input cable is shown at 24 and may be connected with a portable power supply unit (54), Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) comprising a battery (60), an oscillator (61), a capacitive voltage multiplier (63) and a manually operable switch. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown) the rods (42, 43) are disposed annularly against the inner surface of the tube to leave a control channel for the flow of oxygen through the tube. The torch may be used for underwater cutting of metal, concrete, bitumen, coral or other marine growth. When cutting through electrically non-conducting material, a striker plate may be provided to initiate ignition.
