Abstract

1532793 Catalytic combustion systems ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP 30 Oct 1975 [30 Oct 1974] 45067/75 Addition to 1428101 Heading B1F [Also in Division Fl] In a gas turbine engine air from the compressor and a carbonaceous fuel are supplied into a mixing zone in which an intimate admixture is formed, there being metering and temperature sensing means for measuring the flow rate and the temperature of the compressed air, also regulating means for controlling the amounts of fuel and compressed air in response to variations in the fuel demand and in the air temperature so as to maintain the adiabatic flame temperature of the admixture at a preselected value. A combustion system comprising a solid oxidation catalyst is provided into which the admixture is supplied and in which combustion occurs under adiabatic condition at a constant catalyst operating temperature during variations in the fuel demand or combustion air temperature. The combustion gases pass from the combustion systems to a gas turbine. The metering means for the air flow is indicated at 30 in Fig. 1 and that for the fuel at 37; the solid combustion catalyst is indicated at 38 and the air temperature sensing means at 23. The catalyst comprises a zircon mullite honeycomb support which contains a coating of alumina containing palladium, chromia and ceria.
