Abstract
1428101 Gas turbine plant ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP 16 Feb 1973 [18 Feb 1972] 7869/73 Headings F1G and F1L The invention relates to a gas turbine plant comprising an air compressor 10, the air-flow from the compressor being divided into two streams by the air proportioning valve 24. The first stream of air flowing through line 28 is mixed with a carbonaceous fuel which when burned with a stoichiometric amount of air has a flame temperature of at least 3300‹F; the fuel is supplied through line 36 under control of valve 32 which acts in dependence on flow of air through line 28 as sensed by the metering unit 30 such that the fuel/air mixture formed has a substantially constant fuel/air ratio. The fuel/air mixture passes to a combination zone 26 at a velocity which is greater than the maximum flame propagating velocity whereby the fuel is at least partially oxidized at a temperature of 1500 to 3300‹F. The at least partially oxidized fuel/air mixture is then passed to a second mixing zone 48 where it is mixed with the second portion of compressed air passing through line 46. The mixture then passes to the turbine 14. The combustion zone 26 comprises a solid catalyst 38, also an igniter 44 which is utilized at starting, being subsequently de-energized.
