Abstract

1484933 Supporting exhaust purification catalytic element ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP 25 Sept 1974 [26 Sept 1973] 41797/74 Heading B1F An apparatus for purifying gases comprises a casing defining an enclosed space; means defining a gas inlet communicating with the enclosed space; means defining a gas outlet communicating with the enclosed space; a unitary skeletal ceramic structure having (i) two end faces, a plurality of gas inlets and a plurality of gas outlets and (ii) a plurality of gas flow paths therethrough from the gas inlets to the gas outlets, the ceramic structure being positioned in the casing to provide a space between the structure and the casing; a flange member positioned adjacent to the periphery of one of the two end faces of the ceramic structure and positioned inwardly with respect to the casing so that it bridges the space between the casing and the ceramic structure and is positioned over the marginal edge portion of the ceramic structure; and a resilient pre-compressed cushioning member having prior to assembly into the apparatus a solid density of from 10-50% positioned under further compression between the flange member and the adjacent end face of the ceramic structure so that the volume thereof is decreased by an amount in the range of from 10-50% relative to the volume thereof prior to assembly into the apparatus to provide a resilient connection between the flange member and the ceramic structure and to grippingly hold the ceramic structure over the temperature range experienced by the apparatus.
