Abstract

1531953 Cold accumulators C DOOMERNIK 10 Feb 1977 [13 Feb 1976] 5642/77 Heading F4H A cold accumulator comprises a container 14 containing a eutectic mixture and tubular heat exchanger 15 through which a refrigerant is passed to act as an evaporator or condenser, and a pump 35 circulates the liquid portion of the mixture during liquefaction through the gap 32 between the surfaces of the exchanger and the still solid part of the mixture. As described, the exchanger is formed from hairpinshaped pipes 29 having short casing tubes 30 spaced therefrom at each end which pass through tube plates 36, 37 so as to enable the boundary face 32 to form between solid and liquid eutectic and constitute an extension of the tubes 30, 31 and enable the circulation. The free space between the tube plates 36, 37 and container wall is divided by a horizontal partition 35a in which the pump is situated to enable the liquid eutectic to be circulated to remove cold by circulation and during freezing a further pump 43 removes liquid eutectic from the space between the tube plates. One or more of the accumulators may be used with a compression refrigeration system.
