Abstract
1530337 Protecting metal and carbon surfaces CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD 15 Sept 1977 [17 Sept 1976] 38723/76 Heading C1M A method of protecting a metal or carbon surface comprises the steps of depositing a silicon coating thereon under dry non-oxidizing conditions at a temperature in excess of 520K and subsequently oxidizing the coating at a temperature in excess of 520K but under oxidation potential conditions such that the oxidation of the silicon is faster than that of the substrate. The oxidation of the coating may be effected under low oxidation potential conditions with an oxygen partial pressure less than 10<SP>-8</SP> atmospheres. The oxidation may be effected using hydrogen/water vapour with the volume of hydrogen being in excess of the volume of water vapour or effected using carbon monoxide/carbon dioxide. In a modification a metal surface having an oxide coating thereon may be protected using carbon monoxide/carbon dioxide.
