Abstract

1511353 Protective coatings; vapour deposition CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD 21 April 1976 [29 April 1975] 17860/75 Headings C1A and C1M A boron oxide-silicon oxide protective coating on a metal surface, the coating having a composition in the range 20 wt. per cent silicon oxide, 80 wt. per cent boron oxide to 85 wt. per cent silicon oxide 15 wt. per cent boron oxide, is used at an elevated temperature close to the melting point of the coating, but not greater than 1500‹C. The coating may be formed by passing SiH 4 . B 2 H 6 and O 2 in an inert carrier gas over the metal surface, the surface being maintained at a temperature of at least 300‹C and the gas having a temperature at least 50‹C below that of the surface. The coating also shows protection against fused salts e.g. NaCl-NaSO 4 probably due to formation of sodium borosilicate.
