Abstract

1530234 Making stannous sulphate electrolytically TH GOLDSCHMIDT AG 21 Jan 1977 [21 Jan 1976] 02585/77 Heading C7B SnSo 4 is prepared by anodic dissolution of a Sn containing anode in H 2 SO 4 , the cathode (which also contains Sn) and anode being separated by at least one diaphragm of inorganic ceramic material which has been sintered above 1000‹C. Preferably two diaphragms are arranged to form a central compartment. A diaphragm based on a blend of kaolin and alumina or on mullite (3Al 2 O 3 .2SiO 2 ) may be used of thickness >5mm, pore size <2Ám and pore volume >45%. The H 2 SO 4 cone is preferably below 100g/l. To prevent any cathodic Sn deposit from being loose and flaky, decaethyleneglycol monononylphenyl ether may be added to the catholyte. The product is recovered by adding SnO to remove residual H 2 SO 4 followed by filtration and evaporation in vacuo.
