Abstract
153,021. McBride, J. P. Aug. 20, 1919, [Convention date]. Clamps.-In an apparatus for tightening and bolting up plates or like members, prior to riveting, the clamping stem is carried by the rod of an hydraulic piston which has an extension rod on its other side passing through the cylinder head and provided with means tu hold the piston in a position partly or completely pumped up. The piston-rod 6 which is screwed to the piston 3 passes through a gland 7 into a housing 8 and has screwed to its end a pulling stem 9 which, in order to permit of angularity between the stem and plates, passes through a spherical washer 15 mounted in the end of the housing, through the plates 13, 14 and through a concaved washer 17 supported by a spherical washer 16 screwed to the stem. An extension piston-rod 18 of the same diameter as the rod 6 is used so as to maintain a constant volume of fluid in the cylinder. The end of this rod 18 passes through the cylinder head and is fitted with a nut 19 for holding the piston in position, thus preventing backward movement due to leakage, or it may be used to pull the stem positively outwards and hold it in position. A pump plunger 21, Fig. 4, operated by a hand-lever 22 slides in a casing 20 screwed to the cylinder head and operates in connexion with a direct pressure spring valve 25, a similar back pressure valve, and a hand adjusted plug valve 28, which may be set so that pressure may be supplied either to the top or bottom of the cylinder.
