Be it known that I, JAMES P. MCBRIDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented a new and usetightening device; to improve upon my previous applications,-Serial 249920 filed August 14th, 1918; Patent No. 1304895 issued May 27th, 1919, and Serial No. 264448 filed November 26th, 1918, in that improved means of maintaining a constant volume of pumping fluid within the cylinder of the tightener is provided. Another object of this invention is to provide improved construction as regards the piston rod and pulling stem in that a detachable stem is employed. Still another object of this invention is to provide a double ended piston which employs an outside packed extension stem and means thereon for positively pulling the said extension stem outwardly and holding the piston at any desired point in its travel, whereby retrograde movement of the piston while the device is in a holding posi-- tion is prevented.
Other objects will appear as my in ention is more fully explained in the following specifications, illustrated in the accompany ing drawings and pointed out .in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a central sectional elevation of my device with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of my device. Fig. 3-is an enlarged side elevation of the cylinder head and pumping arrangement of my device. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the cylinder head and pumpipig arrangement taken along the line X of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing numeral 1 indicates a hydraulic cylinder which is provided at the'top with a cylinder head 2 and within that a piston 3. .The piston is slidably mounted within the cylinder and is held in fluid tight relationship therewith by means of cup leathers 4 and follower rings 5 upon either end of said piston. A piston rod 6 is screwed into the said piston and extends through a packing gland 7 and beyondthe end of cylinder 1. An extensionjhousi'ng 8 is screwed on to the lower endflf'qthe gland 7 incloses the piston rod '6 as' well as the upper end .of a pulling stem 9. The pulling stem 9 is removably attached to the lower end of the piston rod 6 and extends beyond the housing 8, in order that it may be passed through egisterin holes 11 and 12 in a pair of plates 13 an 14 respectively. Spherical washers 15 and 16 are mounted upon the pulling stem 9, the former slidably and the latter screwed upon the stem. The extension piston rod is equipped with a rather loose nut 19 on its upper end which is easily adjusted to take bearing against the top of the cylinder head and thus hold, the piston in a position partly or completely pumped up. It will be understood that in the practice of pulling plates together such as 13 and 14, that it is fre-- quently necessary to hold the plates in 'position tightly together for some little -period of time after they have been pulledup.
In order to accomplish this it is absolutely necessary that there be provided some means of either preventing all leakage or the pumping fluid past the piston 3 and piston rod 6, or else to provide mechanical look.- ing means for holding the piston in the exact position which it occupies at the time the plates are brought into solid contact. This feature of my device is provided in the extended piston rod 18 and the lock nut 19, it bein only necessary, when it is desired to hol the piston, to run the nut 19 down upon the threads of the stem 18 until the nut contacts with the top of the cylinder head 2. This feature of my device is a distinct improvement upon all previous applications andin so far as I am aware, in the art. It will be apparent that under certain conditions of pump construction that the extenslon piston rod 18 and 19 might be used to return the piston 3 to the top of the cylinder and force the operating fluid to the lower end of the cylinder.
Another function of the extended piston rod 18 is to preserve a constant volume of pumping fluid in the cylinder. This feature is maintained by keeping the diameter of the piston rod 6 and the extension rod 18 equal so that as fluid is pumped from one side of the piston to the other, that portion of the piston rod 6 which replaces the pumping fluid, is equalized by an equivalent portion of the extension rod 18 which has passed out of the fluid chamber.
It has been found by actual operation that it is very necessary to maintain a constant volume of pumping fluid, as otherwise trouble is experienced in the creation of a partial vacuum which frequently permits the pump to lose its suction.
The pumping feature of my device is housed completely within the pump casing 20 which is really an extension of the cylinder head 2 and includes a pump plunger 21 which is operated by means of a hand lever 22 which in turn is fulcrumed as at 23 to a bracket 24 extending from the pump housing .20. A pair of valves, one for direct pressure such as 25 and another for back pressure (not shown) are employed in conjunction with the pump. The valves 25 are similar and are slidably mounted within insert housing 26 and are normally held in a seated position by means of springs 27. It will be understood that the valves are so connected by means of ports which pass through a reverse valve 28 as to permit of the operating fluid being pumped to either end of the cylinder. In order to change the direction of the movement of the piston it is only necessary to throw a hand lever 29 which controls the valve 28. The operating fluid flows from the pump and valves through a passage 30 to the lower end of cylinder 1 when the piston is being raised in the cylinder and in the opposite direction when the piston is being lowered. The valves are completely inclosed within the cylinder head by means of pipe plugs 31 which are internally packed against leakage.
It will be understood from the foregoing description that the pump arrangement in my present device is much simpler and more eflicient than that shown in my previous applications and while the prlnciple in the pumping feature of the device is not materially different from that shown in the previous applications, yet details have been perfected in the latter device. 1
While I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in extending throng lessees the art, and ll'therefore desire to avoid being limited to the exact form shown and described.
Having described my invention, what ll claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device for pulling together a pair of members which are held loosely together, the combination of a pressure cylinder having a cylinder head, a piston slidably mounted within the said pressure cylinder, a piston rod passing through the open end of the said cylin er, an extension piston rod secured to the saidpiston and oppositely disposed to the said piston rod and extending through the said cylinder head, means upon the said extension piston rod'whereby the piston may be held against movement in one direction.
2. In a device for drawing a pair of plates together, the combination of a pressure cylinder having a cylinder head secured to the top thereof, a piston slidably mounted within the said pressure cylinder, pump means mounted within the said cylinder head and connected to said cylinder, whereby an operating fluid may be pumped against either end of the said piston, a piston rod extending downwardly from they said piston, a pulling rod secured to the lower end of the said piston rod and adapted to pass through cooperating holes inv the said plates, means for engaging the outer end of the said pulling stem with one of the said plates and an extension housing secured to the lower end of said cylinder and adapted to bear against the adjacent face of one of the said plates.
3. In a device for pulling together a pair of members having registering holes therein, the combination of a pressure cylinder having a cylinder head secured to its upper end, pump means housed within the said cylinder head and connected to the said cylinder, a piston slidably mounted within the said cylinder, pulling means secured at one plates and to engage the under face of one of the said plates, an extension piston rod secured to the up er end of the piston and the said piston head, means upon the outer end of the said extension piston head whereby the piston may be held against downward movement.
4. In a hydraulic pressure cylinder, the combination of a piston slidably mounted within the said cylinder, a piston rod connected to one end Of the said piston and extending beyond the said cylinder, an extension piston rod of the same diameter as the said piston rod secured to the other end of the said piston and extending beyond the end of the said cylinder, whereby the displacement volume of an operating fluid Wi hi e cylinder Will remain constant regardless of the position of the said piston, a cooperating nut and thread means upon the outer end of the said extension piston rod for engaging the upper end of the cylinder head and holding the said piston against movement in one direction.
5. In a device for drawing a pair of plates together which have registering holes, the combination of a pressure cylinder adapted to be placed adjacent one side of the said plates, a pulling stem extending from the said pressure cylinder and adapted to pass through the registering holes, a sphericalnut upon the outer end of the said stem, a spherical washer intermediate the said pressure cylinder and the opposite face of the said plates, a concave washen intermediate the spherical nut and the said plates, whereby the plates are normally engaged when the said pulling stem is at an angle with a normal line to the said plates.
6. In a hydraulic pressure cylinder the combination of a piston slidably mounted within said cylinder the piston rod connected to one end of the said piston and extending beyond the said cylinder, an extension piston rod secured to the said piston and extending beyond the other end of the said cylinder, and means upon the said extension piston rod whereby the said rod may be drawn upwardl of the said cylinder.
