152,894. Hoyle & Sons, J., Pilling, W., Hall, H., and Parker, S. Dec. 18, 1919. Coating-machines.-In apparatus for applying varnish or size to loom healds, the healds are attached to hooks on endless flexible supports A<1> and are thereby carried between rollers D, D', which are furnished with varnish by means of an endless band E passing through a trough c containing varnish &c. and between spring- pressed rollers D<2>, D<3> for regulating the amount of varnish &c. carried by the band E. The supports A' pass round rollers B, B', B<2>, B<3>, the shaft of the rollers B being driven by bevel gearing, and the shaft of the rollers B<1> being geared by chain gearing &c. to the shaft of the roller D, so that the rollers B', D<1> rotate at the same surface speed. The healds pass between horizontal brushes f, f<1> which are rotated by a suitably-guided belt f<2>, and are also reciprocated horizontally by arrangements described, so as to spread the varnish &c. The spring pressure of the rollers D, D<1> and D<2>, D<3> is adjustable. According to the Provisional Specification, the healds after being varnished, may be removed from the machine and taken to an ordinary brushing-machine.
