Abstract

1528248 Building panels RHONEPOULENC INDUSTRIES 26 May 1976 [30 May 1975] 21889/76 Heading E1B A composite building panel comprises at least one rigid facing I made of terra-cotta, plaster, or agglomerated slate powder, the facing having flanges 2, 3 between which is held a layer of phenolic foam 4 having a density of from 10 to 200kg/m<SP>3</SP>. A primer of epoxy polychloroprene, vinyl, acrylic, recorcinol-formaldehyde, or polyurethane adhesive may be used between the facing 1 and the foam 4. The facings may include channels 22, Fig. 3, in both the base and the flanges. The foam may contain fillers such as talc, mica, chalk, silica, asbestos, or glass fibres. The panel may have a rigid facing at its inner face, Fig. 2, (not shown) or a facing 6 of kraft paper, aluminium, fabric, plasterboard, chipboard, fibro cement or plywood. The panel is made by applying phenolic resin to the facing while it is between 40‹C and 80‹C after emerging from a firing oven. The preferred resin is a resol with a formaldehyde to phenol molar ratio of between 1 to 1 and 3 to 1 and that is obtained by catalysis with an alkaline base in proportions of 0.02 to 0.08 mole of base per mole of phenol, and then neutralised and dehydrated.
