Abstract

1526801 Television BRITISH BROADCASTING CORP 8 Jan 1976 [17 Jan 1975] 2194/75 Heading H4F A method of compensating for undesired signal components in the output of a solid state image sensing device 10, comprises shielding said device from all incident light and storing in a store 20 the output signal obtained by scanning the device to provide a first stored signal, subjecting device 10 to a maximum illumination from a lamp 44, subtracting the first stored signal from the output signal obtained by scanning the device, and storing in a store 30 a second stored signal dependent upon the resultant of the subtraction, the output signal from the device, in normal use, having the first stored signal subtracted therefrom and being modified by the signal from store 30 to produce a signal representative of the resultant of the subtraction divided by the value represented by the second stored signal. The method therefore reduces the effects of a first signal component caused by variations in dark current or breakthrough from clock pulses and which is present in the output of the device 10, and of a second signal component caused by sensitivity variations or by varying transfer efficiencies and which is a linear function of signal level. The signal from device 10, which consists of an array of photosensitive cells, is passed through an analogue-to-digital converter 16 to a subtractor 24, which also receives the signal from store 20. The subtractor 24 is coupled to a logarithmic converter 28 and to a subtractor 34, which also receives the signal from store 30. An antilogarithmic converter 36 is connected to the output of subtractor 34 and has its own output connected to a digital-to-analogue converter 38. A dividing circuit may be used in place of subtractor 34 and converters 28, 36. The stores may apply the average of several scans to subtractors 24, 34 to reduce the effect of random noise in the output of device 10. A sequencer 42 connected to scanning circuits 12 of device 10, to lamp 44, and to switches 22, 32 for stores 20, 30 respectively may control the procedure for storing the desired signals.
