Abstract
152,506. Parker, E. V. Oct. 2, 1919. Starting; stopping; reversing.-Each cylinder is provided with an exhaust valve, a fuel-injection valve, an air-inlet valve for normal running, and a compressed-air inlet valve for starting, worked by separate cams by means of the rods shown in section at 20, 21, 22, and 23 respectively. The upper ends of the rods are pivoted to the valve levers, and the gear is adjusted for starting, running, or stopping by moving the lower ends of the rods simultaneously towards or away from the cylinder so as to bring the appropriate cam-followers within range of the respective cams. For this purpose the rods are connected by links 5 to a yoke 51 moved by a hand-lever. The exhaustvalve rod 20 has three cam bowls, one 40 engaging a single cam during normal running on the fourstroke cycle, the others 41 engaging double cams during starting. When the engine is standing, all the cam followers are moved out of range of the cams; for starting, the rods 21, 23 are inoperative, whilst the rods 22, 20 for the compressed-air valve and the exhaust valve are opened at every revolution; in normal running the compressed-air valve gear and the double cams for the exhaust valve are inoperative. The cam-shaft has forward and reverse cams and is shifted axially for reverse running. The invention is also applicable to engines in which a mixture admission valve and gear are used in place of separate valves and gear for fuel and air.
