Abstract

Bodies.-The body framework of a motor or railway vehicle is constructed of sections consisting of tubes detachably connected together by internal or external lugs which accurately fit the tubes and are held in position thereon by means of diagonal stayrods in tension. As shown, a body framework comprises sections 1 to 7, Fig. 2, one tube in some cases being common to two or more sec. tions. The method of connecting the tubes together is shown in Fig. 3 for the scuttle section, and in Fig. 7 for a door section. The lugs e are preferably formed of stampings varying in form according to the number of tubes to be connected, and are provided with ears e' which are riveted together and are diagonally connected by rods f<1>. In some cases the lugs may be pinned to the tubes. The metal panelling h is bent partly around the tubes as at h<1>, Fig. 8, and is secured thereto by pins h<2>. The floor comprises ribbed plates n, Fig. 30, supported on square tubes or angle-irons n<2> which are secured by clamps n<3> to the bottom tube a of the framework. The rear portion of the body comprising sections 4 to 7 may be completely detached from the front portion to enable another type of rear portion to be fitted.
