Abstract
197,017. Manning, F. E. Feb. 4, 1922. Tubular constructions. -In a frame for motor cars &c. comprising two side structures composed of a series of triangles having a common apex at or about the centre of the frame, the tubular members of which the frame is constructed are flattened at the common apex where they are secured together and the two sides spaced apart by a single bolt. As shown, a tubular frame for a motor cycle is composed of two side structures each comprising members 1, 3 extending from the head 2 to points near the rear axle and a member extending upwardy and rearwardly. These three members meet at a common point where they are reinforced by sleeves, liners, &c. and subsequently flattened and detachably connected by a bolt 10. The members 1, 3, 8 are connected at the rear by a member 6, a down tube 4 connects the lower end of the head 2 to the engine, and the bolt 10 is connected to a two part member 5 by vertical stays 11. Where the end of one member, such as 1, 3 or 8, is connected to another, such as 6, it may be flattened and bent as shown in Fig. 4 to receive the other member to which it is detachably secured by a bolt; or the end may be split longitudinally, opened out, and the wings so formed flattened and bent to receive the flattened portion of the other member there-between. In the case of light frames, the tube 3 may be dispensed with. According to the Provisional Specification, one tube where it crosses another, is split longitudinally, opened out, and the openedout portions flattened, the other tube. being passed through the aperture and secured by a bolt.
