396,763. Reinforcing motor-vehicle frame members. HUPP MOTOR CAR CORPORATION, 3641, East Milwaukee Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. Feb. 2, 1932, No. 3086. Convention date, Feb. 2, 1931. [Class 108 (ii).] The forward end portions of chassis longitudinals, which project beyond the body portion in the conventional type of motor vehicle, are braced so as to resist twisting or other relative movements by angularly-arranged tension and compression members extending upwardly therefrom to a common apex or to form with each other and/or portions of the body a rigid unit. In the simplest form a single pair of stays extends from the frame longitudinals at the base of the radiator to the centre of the upper edge of the dashboard, forming, with the front cross-frame member, a rigid triangle. In Figs. 1 and 2, a similar triangular frame 20 is shown more steeply inclined, its apex being joined to a pair of diverging stays 21 attached at their rear ends to the dashboard and thus forming a second triangle. From the dashboard, further stays 23 may proceed downwards within the vehicle body 11 to the longitudinals. From the common apex of the triangles, reinforcing stays 24 may extend to the radiator shell. In the construction shown in Fig. 9, the apex of the front triangle 26 is connected to the apex of a triangle 29 extending vertically from the longitudinals 13 in the vicinity of the dashboard. The stays are preferably formed of tubular rod welded &c. together at the apices and bolted to the frame members &c. so as to be readily detachable.
