Abstract

1524410 Stabilization of polyacetals by heat treatment SOC ITALIANA RESINE SIR SpA 23 Dec 1976 [23 Dec 1975] 53737/76 Heading C3P The degradation of unstable chains in etherified homopolyacetals derived from formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, chloral, trioxan or tetraoxan, of molecular weight at least 10,000, is achieved by heating the polymer in the molten state at 130-240‹ C. A polar liquid such as water and/or organic hydroxy compound may be present mixed with the melt. The liquid may also contain a base. Suitable liquids are water, methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, t-butanol and benzyl alcohol. Suitable bases are alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxides, salts of a strong base and a weak acid, ammonia, amines, amino-alcohols and amidines.
