Abstract

Film- and fibre-forming polyesters are made by polymerizing beta-propiolactone in the presence of a catalyst which is a primary-, secondary- or tertiary amine, a quaternary ammonium compound or a heterocyclic compound containing nitrogen in the ring. The compounds may contain hydroxyl or carboxyl substituents and may be used in the form of their salts with inorganic or organic acids. Polymerization is effected at - 80 DEG to 150 DEG C. in the presence or absence of an organic liquid. The polyesters are soluble in halogenated hydrocarbons, dimethyl formamide and formic acid and may be precipitated from these solvents by the addition of a non-solvent.
