Abstract

A composition comprises a thermosetting acrylic resin and an alkyd resin that is modified by an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid in which the carboxylic acid group is directly attached to a tertiary or quaternary carbon atom. Thermosetting acrylic resin is defined as one that is converted into an infusible, insoluble product by reaction with an epoxy compound, peroxide, acid or anhydride, or an amine. The exemplified acrylic resin is a reaction product of a copolymer containing methylolacrylamide groups with a epoxy resin. The preferred aliphatic carboxylic acid modifying agent contains at least 9 carbon atoms and is made by reacting olefins or paraffins with formic acid or with carbon monoxide and water. The compositions may also contain a melamine formaldehyde resin. The composition is preferably made by dissolving the constituents in a solvent, optionally with a pigment such as titanium dioxide, spraying or coating on to panels and, after drying, cross-linking by baking.
