Abstract
Sulphones of formula 1,4-C6H4(CF2SO2R)2, where R is Et, Pr, Bu or Ph, are made by oxidizing, with H2O2, the corresponding bisthioethers, which in turn are prepared by reacting with RSH and NaOMe, 1,4-C6H4 (CF2Br)2; the latter compound is made by reacting 1,4-C6H4(CHF2)2 with N - bromosuccinimide.ALSO:Para-xylylene polymers having the repeating unit -Y2C-C6H4-CY2- are made by heating sulphones of formula RSO2-Y2C-C6H4-CY2 -SO2R at 600-1000 DEG C. to give diradicals .Y2C-C6H4-CY2. which are then condensed below 40 DEG C. for polymerization; Y is H or halogen, R is a C1- 12 hydrocarbon group and the C6H4 nucleus may contain up to 3 substituents. In examples poly(perfluoro-p-xylylene) and poly-p-xylylene are prepared.
