Abstract

152,413. Winder, J. S. July 12, 1919. Vaporizers, external.-Relates to surface carburettors of the kind described in Specification 110,944, and consists in providing one or more annular or solid wicks projecting above or into a fuel-distributing chamber, situated between a vertically-operated needle fuel-valve' and the mixing-chamber, the opening of the fuel valve being varied to suit the opening of the induction valve by a lever connecting these valves. Fig. 2 shows a single annular wick A surrounded by a heating-jacket H and projecting at the top into a chamber B supplied with fuel through a needle valve F, which is opened by the pressure of fuel or by a spring. The fuel passes through holes b to the wick and flows down by gravity to meet an upward current of air. A central tube D with diaphram d has ports d<1> for admitting air, and ports d<1> controlled by a sliding sleeve-valve E for throttling the supply of carburetted air to the engine. The upper part of the needle valve F bears against an adjustable screw g, Fig. 1, on a lever G to limit the rise of the valve F in accordance with the position of the valve E. Fig. 4 shows four annular wicks A arranged in casings so as to receive fuel from a chamber B through holes b, the air passing upwards through the passages D in the wicks. The supply of fuel to the chamber B is controlled by a needle valve F connected to the sliding throttle-valve E. Gauze screens d<2>, d<3> are fitted at each end of the wick to prevent back-fire. Fig. 12 shows an arrangement in which fuel flows downwards from the chamber B through a number of solid circular wicks A to a chamber B<1>, from which it tends also to rise bv capillary action. Air passes over the wicks and through a gauze shield c to the throttle valve E, this valve being connected to the needle valve controlling the fuel supply to chamber B.
