Abstract
1523898 Gettering PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 Sept 1975 [26 Sept 1974] 38936/75 Heading H1D A getter holder, e.g. for a television display tube, comprises a U-shaped channel for containing compressed getter powder wherein the inner surface of at least a side wall portion of the channel has at least one shallow depression extending into the surface to a depth of between 0À5 Ám. and two tenths of the wall portion thickness. As shown, the depressions may be one or more grooves 3, 4, 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP> which have been formed in a sheet of chromium-nickel steel prior to it being shaped into the annular U-channel shown. The average roughness of the inner surface of the channel may be at least 0À5 Ám. In alternative arrangements the surface roughness may be obtained by sand-blasting or pickling with a solution of ferric chloride in hydrochloric acid. The getter, which may be initially partly compressed before being compressed in the getter holder itself, comprises equal parts by weight of BaAl 4 and Ni with 0À5% of total weight of TiH 2 , and is evaporated by RF induction heating after mounting in the tube.
