Abstract

The cylindrical metal can is capable of withstanding internal pressures of 6.34 kg/cm2 and temperatures up to 60 deg. C. The can wall material is typically aluminium or steel with a thickness in the range 0.178 to 0.889 mm. The joint forms a hermetic seal by rolling the can lip (10) and lid rim (18) together to form a double wall compressible capsule (30). The production method is to push a piston into the lid to force it into the can and apply a peripheral pressure to the rim edge by a free-wheeling roller. In the first stage the thickness of the double seam is about 2.5mm and on 1.7mm at the second stage.
