Abstract
1523163 Surface - wave waveguides NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 11 June 1976 [14 March 1975] 10878/75 Heading H1W [Also in Division H5] An umbilical link 4 for conveying life support requisites to a diver 5 comprises a flexible waveguide terminating in a microwave load adjacent the diver so that in use microwave energy in a surface-wave mode directed by the waveguide from a microwave generator on a surface vessel or submersible chamber 3 to the load is converted to thermal energy for supply to the diver. The waveguide comprises an inner dielectric tube 8 surrounded by an outer tube 7 of a material of lower dielectric constant. The inner tube 8 is made of plastics loaded with metallic particles and the microwave energy is passed along the inner tube 8 as a surface wave. Fibre optic links 10 embedded in the wall of outer tube 7 provide communication circuits and psysiological monitoring circuits.
