Abstract

1521138 IC engine pistons TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 31 Oct 1975 [13 Dec 1974] 45565/75 Heading F1B A piston for an I.C. engine comprises a cavity 38 whose peripheral wall is a right circular cylinder the cavity having an opening 43 eccentric with respect to the axes of the peripheral wall and the piston. Air is induced into combustion chamber 40 via an intake valve 32 and is caused to swirl, e.g. by a shroud on the valve, so that when fuel is injected from nozzle 34 the injection is into swirling air in cavity 38. The direction of swirl carries the rich mixture formed adjacent the nozzle 34 towards a spark plug 37 for ignition.
