Abstract
1520410 Heat-treating wire BABCOCK WIRE EQUIPMENT Ltd 24 June 1975 [24 June 1974] 27926/74 Heading C7N [Also in Divisions H2 and R5 Wire 2 is heated by passage therethrough of current from sheaves 4, 8, 10, 12 as the wire runs over them, the sheaves being mounted on shafts 34, Fig. 2 rotating in housings 38, Fig. 2 with electrical terminals, 76, Fig. 2 having flanges 44, Fig. 2 with truncated conical peripheries running in liquid metal in pockets of the housing that conducts electricity from the housing to the flanges and thus to shafts, sheaves and wire. Sheaves 4, 8, 10, 12, Fig. 1, are driven, the other sheaves are idlers. Three phase, delta power connections are made to sheaves 4, 8, 10 whilst sheave 12 is electrically connected to sheave 4 and to earth. The wire passes through air through guard tubes 22, 24, through steam in guard tubes 26, 28 to prevent oxidation and is cooled in elliptical guard tube 30 by sprays of water. The base of duct 30 is below the surface of water in container 32. When copper wire is being treated it reaches 200‹C at sheave 8, 385‹C in section 9 and 550‹C in section 11.
