Axles and axle structures.-The rear axle structure comprises two similar parts k', k<2>, welded together and expanded at the centre to receive the driving-gearing which is enclosed in a casting i secured to the torque and thrust member l. A cover-plate closes the gear casing at the rear. The axle parts are strengthened at the centre by distance-pieces f, Fig. 5, and at the ends by flanged members r<1>, Fig. 9. The axle-ends carry ball-members g to which the spring shackles are secured. The meshing of the bevel-gear driving the differential may be adjusted in two ways : (1) the torque tube l may be moved longitudinally by rotating the screwed member d, the propeller shaft b being prevented from axial movement by a double-thrust bearing c; and (2) the differential casing may be adjusted in its bearings n, o. The differential shafts are provided with bushes h rotating in bearings and having conical extensions on which the road-wheels fit, the drive being transmitted to the road-wheels through splines t.
