Abstract

151,933. Virel, A. de, and Cahen, M. E. Sept. 30, 1919, [Convention date]. Endless - t r a c k vehicles.-In endlesstrack tractors &c. fitted with road wheels, the road wheels and track rollers are mounted on pivoted frames arranged so that the change from road wheels to tracks, and vice versa, can be effected by running the vehicle over a pair of obstacles thus enabling catches to be operated to hold or release the pivoted frames. The tracks pass round rollers 6, 7 mounted on frames 4, 5 pivoted to the main frame 1 at 2 and 3. The rear road wheels 9 are carried on an extension of the frame 4 and may be co-axial with the driving sprockets for the tracks. The front road wheels 12 are carried on a frame extension 10 and are held in their inoperative positions by releasable catches 57 on the main frame. The road-wheel axles are connected to springs 48, 49 pivoted to the main frame and provided with extensions which, when the tracks have been flexed by means of wedge-shaped obstacles 60, can be engaged by hand-operated catches 50, 52. The road wheels are then held in their operative positions. To revert to track propulsion, the vehicle is again passed over similar obstacles to support the tracks and the catches 50, 52 are then released; on driving the vehicle forward to clear the obstacles the tracks are straightened and the wheels raised from ground engagement. The axles 8 on which, in the form shown, the driving sprockets for the tracks and the road wheels are mounted, are driven by chain gearing from sprockets on the pivots 2, clutches being provided for driving the wheels and tracks alternatively. The front wheels 12 are steerable, the operating-rod being fitted with a universal joint to permit the elevation and depression of the wheels. The tracks are tensioned by adjusting the bearings 31. Fig. G, by means of screws 35. The bearings slide in jaws 33, one of the jaws being provided with a pivoted rack 37 engaging a similar rack on the bearing 31 to maintain it in its adjusted position.
