Abstract

1518860 Towing apparatus R K A THOMPSON 5 Oct 1976 [15 Dec 1975 15 March 1976] 51190/75 and 10204/76 Heading B7V A ship has a towing member 1 located in a recess in the hull's side and fastened, to a strong post 9 which is either directly or indirectly connected to the main framework of the ship's hull at its top and bottom ends. As disclosed the towing member is a bolt 1 having either a bifurcated or single head 2 for attachment to the eye of a tow tope via a pin 5. The shaft of the bolt 1 extends through an aperture in the post 9 and is retained in place by a pin 4 and wedge member 8. The ship's ribs in the way of the recess are set back on the inboard side of the inner wall of the recess. The forward end of the recess merges into the contour of the hull plating 18. A pipe (not shown) extends downwards from a winch deck to open at the top wall of the recess and it receives a chain for moving or like operations. Personnel are lowered down the ship's side to connect a tow cable to the member 1 or a short cable may extend from the towing member up on to the deck, its free end being attached to a tow rope when desired.
