Abstract

1518789 Hot water systems; solar heaters B R CARTER 24 June 1975 [24 June 1974] 27906/74 Headings F4A and F4U In an apparatus for storing hot water, a hot water storage tank 1 is provided with adjustable inlet means for supplying hot water from a solar heater 6 to any one of a range of levels in the tank in response to a predetermined relationship between the hot water temperature and the temperature gradient within the tank such that the level increases and decreases with the temperature of the hot water. As shown in Fig. 1, water is supplied to the hot water storage tank 1 through a mains inlet pipe 3 and an outlet pipe 2 is provided from which hot water is drawn for use. Water to be heated is drawn from the lower region of the tank 1, through a pipe 4 by a pump 5, through the solar heater 6 and the heated water is returned by way of a pipe 7. The pipes 4 and 7 are connected to flexibly mounted pipes 14 and 8 respectively. The pipe 8 is responsive to the temperature difference measured by sensors 10, 11 which act through a controller 12 and a motor 13 which acts to raise and lower the pipe 8 so that hot water is supplied to the tank at a level of slightly lower water temperature. Thus, under conditions of high solar energy, water is heated to a high temperature in the solar heater 6 and is supplied to the tank at a high delivery level. Under conditions of low solar energy, water is heated to a lower temperature and is supplied to the tank at a correspondingly lower delivery level. The pipe 14 is responsive to the temperature difference measured by sensors 16, 17 which act through a controller 18 and a motor 19.
