1517777 Steam irons HOOVER Ltd 24 Sept 1975 [7 Oct 1974] 39127/75 Heading D1A A steam/dry iron includes a manually movable knob 80 connected to a valve member 46 to provide three spaced positions with respect to a valve orifice 58 allowing no-flow, limited steady flow or maximum steady flow from a water reservoir 22 to a steam generating chamber (14) and then via steam passageways (16) to orifices (18) in an electrically heated soleplate (12). As shown piston 60 on member 46 prevents water flowing through orifice 58 and the iron operates dry. Lifting member 46 allows water to enter cylinder 56 through notches 54 and flow through orifice 58 (Figure 3, not shown). Moving member 46 from the latter position downwards causes piston 60 to eject water through orifice 58 giving a momentary pressurised steam pulse through orifices (18), (Figure 4, not shown). Moving member 46 to the uppermost position (Figure 5, not shown) removes metering pin 66 from the orifice giving maximum steady flow. Thumb knob 80 is pinned to member 46 for pivoting relative to handle 24 and may be latched in the no-flow position. A button (32) operates a pump to spray water from a nozzle (34).
