Abstract

1517620 Gasifying hydrocarbons METALLGES AG 7 Dec 1976 [19 Dec 1975] 51067/76 Heading C5E Hydrocarbons having a lower boiling point limit of 250‹C are reacted with steam and a free oxygencontaining gas under a pressure of 5 to 150 bars and at a temperature of 1000 to 1600‹C in a catalystfree reaction chamber to produce a product gas comprising carbon monoxide and hydrogen, the reactants and the product gas being caused to flow together through a gas-permeable bed of loose granular inert solids before leaving the reaction chamber. The gas-permeable bed preferably occupies 25 to 60% of the volume of the reaction chamber and the inert solids, which may comprise alumina, magnesia, magnesium or aluminium silicates, magnesium or aluminium spinels or highmelting metals such as titanium, preferably have a particle size of 5 to 30 mm. The product gas is relatively free from carbon black.
