Abstract

In the synthesis of hydrocarbons with or without the synthesis of oxygen-containing organic compounds, from carbon monoxide and steam, the catalyst is activated by pretreatment with an industrial gas containing carbon monoxide and rich in one or more gases ineffective to reduce and activate the catalyst. The gas is preferably free from hydrogen and may be producer gas or blast furnace gas, and activation is carried out at atmospheric or super-atmospheric pressur and at a temperature up to 100 DEG C. above that of the synthesis. The catalyst may be a metal of the 8th group such as cobalt, iron, nickel or ruthenium, containing promoters such as compounds of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and magnesium; thorium oxide, cerium oxide, aluminium oxide and chromium oxide; and also compounds of manganese, vanadium, boron, copper, nickel, silver, and gold. The catalyst may be used in fixed bed or fluidized bed form. In an example, an alkaline iron-copper-kieselguhr catalyst was treated for 24 hours with blast furnace gas at 270 DEG C. under normal pressure. Specification 707,972, [Group IV (b),] is referred to.ALSO:In the synthesis of hydrocarbons with or without the synthesis of oxygen-containing organic compounds from carbon monoxide and steam, the catalyst is activated by pretreatment with an industrial gas containing carbon monoxide and rich in one or more gases ineffective to reduce and activate the catalyst. The gas is preferably substantially free from hydrogen and may be producer gas or blast-furnace gas, and activation is carried out at atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure and at a temperature up to 100 DEG C. above that of the synthesis. The catalyst may be a metal of the 8th group such as cobalt, iron nickel or ruthenium, containing promoters such as compounds of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and magnesium; thorium oxide, cerium oxide, aluminium oxide, and chromium oxide; and also compounds of manganese, vanadium, boron, copper, nickel, silver and gold. The catalyst may be used in fixed bed or fluidized bed form. In an example, an alkalized iron-copper-kieselguhr catalyst was treated for 24 hours with blast furnace gas at 270 DEG C. under normal pressure and the product used in the preparation of hydrocarbons by passing a mixture of blast-furnace gas and water vapour in the ratio of 3 volumes of CO to 1 of steam over the catalyst at 240-260 DEG C. at a gauge pressure of 20 atmospheres. Specification 707,972 is referred to.
