Abstract
A process for the catalytic hydrogenation of carbon monoxide with recycling of a portion of the exit gases from the reactor, comprises dividing the recirculated gas into two streams, recycling one stream to the reactor without removing its content of carbon dioxide, and removing the carbon dioxide as extensively as possible from the other stream and combining it with the incoming fresh synthesis gas. The process may employ fixed bed catalysts, fluidized catalysts, catalysts suspended in liquids, or catalysts which are moved continuously downwardly through the synthesis zone. The hydrogen to carbon monoxide may be from 0.7 to 3.0 to 1, and the temperature may lie between 170 DEG and 350 DEG C. and the gas pressure may be from 5-100 kgs./sq. cm. In an example a catalyst was used consisting of 100 parts of Fe, 25 parts of Cu, 5 parts of K2O and 25 parts of SiO2 and the gas entering the reactor comprised 24.5 per cent Co and 48.9 per cent of H2. The recycle gas was divided, one part having a CO2 content of 12 per cent and the other part having this content reduced to 0.1 per cent.
