Abstract
1516673 Purification of waste water using activated sludge STANDARD OIL CO 6 June 1975 24399/75 Heading C1C A continuous process for purifying contaminated water including solids and hydrocarbons, uses the sequential process treatments of: (i) adjustment of water conditions in an equalization zone to equalize contaminant conditions such that concentrations of contaminants remain substantially constant and to ensure the necessary level of dissolved oxygen, (ii) biological degradation in a multi-stage biological treatment zone, activated sludge process; and (iii) removal of residual biological solids present which may impair water clarity or adversely affect water taste and odour, the water from the equalization zone being filtered to contain not more than ten parts of suspended solids or hydrocarbons per million parts of water prior to the first stage of the multi-stage activated sludge process, and a portion of the sludge being recycled to the first stage of the multi-stage activated sludge process. The process is specially suited for treating waste water from oil refineries and chemical plants where the two effluents may be mixed.
