Abstract

1514545 Spray-producers STORK AMSTERDAM BV 20 Aug 1975 [28 Aug 1974] 34692/75 Heading B2F An atomizer for use in spray drying comprises an atomizer disc 3 secured to a rotatable shaft 2 and having an inner chamber 5 and one or more discharge channels 6, a stationary supporting member 1 including a cover plate 11 and provided with a channel 4 for supplying liquid to the chamber 5, a first labyrinth seal 7 between the supporting member 1 and the rotatable shaft 2, a second labyrinth seal between the supporting member 1 and the atomizer disc 3, and conduits 9, 10 for supplying steam to the respective labyrinth seals, thereby preventing air from being sucked into the atomizer disc. Each discharge channel comprises an inset tube 12 having a stepped bore with its portion of narrowest cross-section at the outlet end 6'. To prevent liquid from splashing against the wall of the supporting member 1, the chamber 5 may have an annular wall 16 or may have an upper surface as indicated by the dotted line 17. The atomizer may be enclosed in a casing 18 and air which has been used for cooling the bearings (not shown) of the shaft 2 may be discharged through a slit 19 between the lower edges of the casing 18 and cover plate 11 to improve the drying of the atomized liquid.
