Abstract
In order to obtain a soluble alkali silicate of high silica content, the product obtained by the fusion of alkali and silica is dissolved in water, and an acid then added, whereby gelatinous silicic acid is thrown down, and this precipitate by continued agitation is made to re-dissolve in the solution. The acid, preferably sulphuric acid, may be added in the form of spray; and after the subsequent operation of agitation or grinding, the solution may be evaporated to dryness. Moreover, to increase the fusibility of the alkali and silica a little borax may be employed in the fusion process.
