Abstract
1513190 Insect exterminating apparatus THORN DOMESTIC APPLIANCES (ELECTRICAL) Ltd 16 Nov 1976 47762/76 Heading AIM Insects are electrocuted when they bridge first and second helical electrodes 19, 20 across which is connected a capacitor C6 which is charged at high voltage but relatively slowly compared with its discharge time. The capacitor C6 is charged by means of a Cockcroft and Walton voltage-multiplying and rectifying circuit D1-4, C2-5, connected to the secondary of transformer T1. A battery- or mains-driven oscillator circuit comprising transistors TR1, TR2 supplies the primary of transformer T1, and its frequency of operation is controlled by zener diode D5 by the back-emf in the primary of transformer T1. When the capacitor C6 is fully charged, the oscillator circuit operates just often enough to compensate for losses in the Cockcroft and Walton circuit. The loss current energises an ultra-violet discharge lamp 17. The electrodes 19, 20 and a guard 5 are secured together so that when the guard 5 is removed from a base 2, electrode pins 27. 28 are disengaged from connectors 29, 30. Microswitches S1, S2 are arranged to disconnect the battery and short the capacitor C6 as the guard 5 is removed, and/or the base 2 is disassembled. A spark gap device is included in one or both leads to the electrodes 19, 20. A removable tray 7 includes a pedestal 13 for scent attractant, and contains water.
