Abstract

1512997 Separators for lead acid batteries W R GRACE & CO 13 May 1975 [13 May 1974] 20159/75 Heading H1B A lead-acid battery comprises at least one microporous separator made of a synthetic plastics resin containing a mineral filler and an organic compound having hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups in its molecule, the compound being insouble in the battery electrolyte. The resin is preferably polyethylene containing silica as the mineral filler and the organic compound is preferably an adduct of an alkylphenol with ethylene oxide. The separators may be impregnated with the organic compound by immersing them in a hexane bath containing 3 % by weight of the compound. After immersion for about 10 seconds the separators are drained and dried at room temperature. Alternatively an emulsion containing the compound may be spread on the surface of the separator.
