Abstract

1512119 Vitreous-metallic isostatic pressing mould UNITED TECHNOLOGIES CORP 14 Dec 1976 [16 Dec 1975] 52141/76 Heading C1M [Also in Division C7] A gas-impervious container, for hot isostatic compaction of particulate material (e.g. metals, alloys to form turbine blades or discs) into an article of intricate configuration, is made by forming a vitreous frit shell on a removable pattern, heating to vitrify the shell and coating the shell with a metal layer to make it gas-impervious, the pattern being removed at any time after the shell formation. The pattern may be of wax, plastics material or a dissolvable or low melting point metal; the vitreous shell (e.g. of 96% silica) may be 2À5-10À1 mm. thick; the metal layer should be at least 0À25 mm. thick and may be deposited by spraying, vacuum deposition or electroplating. Reference is made to isostatic pressing of Ni-based superalloys.
