Abstract

1511310 Subjecting wet lignocellulosic material to microwave energy treatment MO OCH DOMSJO AB 22 Sept 1975 [27 Sept 1974] 38856/75 Headings D2A and D2W A method of loosening or separating cellulose fibres in water - containing lignocellulosic material comprises subjecting disintegrated water - containing lignocellulosic material to microwave energy of such intensity and under such conditions that the water present in the lignocellulosic material is vapourised so rapidly as to reduce the lignocellulosic material at least partly to pulp without shortening the fibres to any appreciable degree and without damaging the fibres in any other way. In an example, pine chips having a moisture content of 70% were treated in a wave guide with microwave radiation, the temperature of the chips at the beginning of the treatment being at 100‹C. The wave guide was connected to a microwave generator having a power output of 5MW at a frequency of 2450MHz. The treatment can be effected at a pressure above, at. or below atmospheric pressure. The lignocellulosic material may be in chip form, or it may be wood whose fibres have been partially loosened by means of a defibrating device, or by a chemical or physical treatment. The lignocellulosic material may be subjected to a preheating process.
