Abstract

1510459 Fuel supply to some cylinders only; plural carburetters BRITISH LEYLAND UK Ltd 4 June 1975 [4 June 1974] 24795/74 Headings F1B and F1H A spark ignition I.C. engine has a first group of cylinders 11-13 and a second group of cylinders 14-16 fed by respective carburetters 18, 20 by way of manifolds 17, 19 between which is connected a pressure balancing duct 21 having an isolating valve B to allow or prevent the pressure to be balanced between the manifolds. A valve A is provided whereby fuel bowl 27 of carburetter 20 can be connected to a source of vacuum to prevent flow of fuel to the second group of cylinders. Alternatively the flow is limited to a low value by throttle valve 23 until the opening of throttle valve 22 corresponds to a vehicle speed of 60 m.p.h. In operation, for vehicle speeds up to 60 m.p.h. valve B is closed and valve A is open and the fuel supply to cylinders 11-13 increases as throttle valve 22 is opened, throttle valve 23 remaining closed or almost closed. Above 60 m.p.h., valve B opens, valve A closes and throttle valve 23 opens progressively so that there is an increasing fuel flow-rate to the cylinders 14-16. A ventilation line 26 connects the carburetters to the engine crank-case to recycle crank-case gases.
