Abstract
1509984 Discharge lamps VARIAN ASSOCIATES Inc 6 April 1976 [10 April 1975] 13879/76 Heading H1D In a movable-electrode arc lamp, particularly of the type disclosed in patent 1,461,448, in which disposed opposite a cathode 30 having an apex at its end portion 31 is a further electrode, as shown an anode 40, which has a recess 41 at its end, when the electrodes 30, 40 are caused to contact, Fig. 3, the cathode apex is received into the anode recess 41 such that no part of the apex is in contact sith the anode. This arrangement ensures that each time the arc lamp is started by first bringing the electrodes 30, 40 into contact, by energizing the solenoid 51 that moves the armature 53 attached to the anode 40; and then separating the electrodes, the cathode apex at the end of conical cathode tip 31 does not get damaged. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the movable electrode is a so-called stinger electrode (40<1>) which is disposed coaxially within a fixed anode (60) and which is used solely for starting the lamp.
