Abstract

1509731 Bearings F HECK 4 April 1975 [6 April 1974] 13959/75 Heading F2A [Also in Division B3] A method of making a lined bearing comprises applying a layer of metallic bonding material to the radially inner surface of a bearing ring and casting on a layer of lining material in the presence of steam and a flux. The bonding material may be tin or an alloy thereof, the lining material may be white metal and the flux may be one or more of zinc chloride, stannous chloride, stannic chloride, lead chloride, antimony trichloride, antimony oxychlorides and ammonium chloride. A steel ring 1 is first cleaned and then a slurry containing tin powder and flux optionally together with some nickel powder and small iron articles such as nuts or rivets, is applied thereto. The ring is then placed in an oven (5) and slowly rotated whilst being heated to 300‹ C. to melt the tin. After removal from the oven the nuts or rivets are removed from the ring and the latter clamped between a pair of cones 9 and 10 in a centrifugal casting machine 8. An aqueous solution of flux is then introduced into the casting chamber 11 through a pipe 26 resulting in the sudden formation of steam and a fine distribution of flux. The pipe 26 is then withdrawn and molten white metal introduced through a pipe 21. During the centrifugal casting process the ring is cooled by water from nozzles 28. Gaseous chlorine may be introduced into the casting chamber 11 prior to pouring in the molten lining material and cones 9 and 10 are preferably provided with a plasma layer of alumina or titanium. In a modification, a flux layer is applied to the surface of the ring before the tin powder.
