Abstract

Process for preparing a derivative of streptovaricinone C of the following general formula <IMAGE> in which Z is an acyl, alkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, alkylsulphonyl or benzenesulphonyl group which is optionally substituted by halogen, hydroxyl, cyano, nitro, alkyl, phenyl, alkoxy, phenoxy, carbamyl or acetylamino, characterised in that an alkali metal salt of streptovaricinone C is esterified in the 6 position with a corresponding organic carboxylic acid halide, a corresponding organic sulphonic acid halide, or an alkylhalocarbonate. The derivatives of streptovaricinone C which are obtained are useful antibiotics having good antibiotic activity towards Gram-positive bacteria.
